Time to buy groceries

Today the girls and I have worked and rested. Therefore, this will not be my usual thought provoking post. I like to think they are thought provoking articles carefully written to question the readers ideas and provoke meaningful conversations about the article once they are read. How do you value your blog posts?

imageI need to go grocery shopping. Therefore, I placed a turkey we had in the freezer in the crockpot because it was taking up too much space. I have never thought of cooking a whole turkey in the crockpot. Depending on how the turkey turns out, this may become our traditional method of preparation.

I saw a block of cheese taking up space in one of the bins of the freezer. We have plenty of boxes of pasta. Homemade macaroni and cheese it is. I looked in the refrigerator and ‘no milk’. Yet, we have tons of cans of evaporated milk in the cabinet. I told the girls, ‘sometimes you have to use what you have until you get what you want’. I grated the cheese, old fashioned way, used the canned milk and kept it moving.

We had a bag of frozen appetizers in the freezer taking up space. Yup, you guessed it. #8 placed them on the baking sheet and they ate them today for snacks. They thanked me for baking them and asked me to buy more. Kudos to me because they have let them stay in the freezer forever after over looking them day after day. We’ve had them for months.

imageWe had an open package of ‘Lil Wieners’ in the fridge and an open pack of Turkey Bacon. The girls are in the kitchen now wrapping the wieners in bacon and complaining we don’t have brown sugar for them to make the wiener wraps like I do. “Pretend and eat them anyway” is what I told them. They took the first batch out of the oven and I can hear them eating with joy.

Last night I found a bag of bean soup in the cabinet. I soaked .5 of the beans overnight and placed them in the small crockpot this morning. I’ve never eaten bean soup before today. I added a can of crushed tomatoes to the mix and magnificent. It is good. The girls and I ate several bowls each

I checked the pantry and we are in need of staple items there as well. The last time I checked the pantry we had 4 boxes of pancake mix. Today I realized we are down to the last box of pancake mix. The girls told me our son makes them every time he comes home. Go figure.

I can see the back of the cabinet which is NEVER good. Seeing the cabinet means I am out of Ravioli’s, Spaghetti-O’s, canned vegetables, salmon and tuna. The quick go-to foods I like to keep on hand for the days I don’t feel like cooking. The good things is, I always feel like cooking during the school year, which is why I did not notice what we don’t have.

I don’t grocery shop often. I belive the last time I did any major grocery shopping was August, for my annual back-to-school, back-to-cooking shopping. I purchase as much meat I think can fit into the freezer. According to my husband, I buy more meat than the freezer can hold. The only reason I’m going to agree is because the last time I went grocery shopping, I had to plan dinner for the week because the meats had to go into the refrigerator. He’s right.

Please be mindful, I do shop more often than every 5 months. I just restock everything, usually, every 3 months. Hence the reason everything is on ‘E’. I was trying to wait out my husband to cook the turkey. I lost. I’m not a turkey lover. I did tell the girls they will be eating turkey soup, turkey salad and sliced turkey sandwiches for the week. We do not believe in wasting food.

We washed all the laundry and put the clothes away. Swept and moped the kitchen floor. I cleaned the powder room first thing this morning. Humm. We have not cleaned the bathrooms upstairs. I’m glad its a long weekend because they certainly have more work to do.

Thank you for stopping by and reading my article of how I empty my freezer and fridge before I do major grocery shopping. Oh, and ramblings of my day today.

  1. 5 months sounds about right for me, lol! I am going to do better in 2013! So nice to meet you today SITStah!

    • Yes we are on ‘E’ right now. We’ve had pancakes everyday this weekend for breakfast. I’m keeping it fresh my allowing the girls to have their own day to make breakfast. At 9 and 6 years old, they think its great!

  2. This post reminds me that I have a ham bone in the fridge I’ve been meaning to make into some soup. No school today for the kids so I’m going to throw everything in the crock pot now while they’re sleeping and enjoy the day knowing that dinner’s done!

    • Aren’t crockpots the best?! I used to get offended when my friends would tease me for always using a crockpot, primarily, during the school year. After a while, I realized I was the smart one. When I wake-up or get home from work, my dinner is done. Thanks you for sharing.

      Blessings~

  3. I put the whole breast of turkey into the crock pot as soup. I just diced and onion, garlic celery carrot and potato and some Italian parsley and threw it in the pot. Then I cut as much of the meat off of the bone and added chicken stock and let it cook for 8 hours on low. When I came home I added egg noodles and let it cook for about 15 minutes and had a great soup!!! Simply Heavenly!!! :) :)
